Senate sets c’ttee on harmonisation of electoral bill

A Conference Committee on the 2021 Electoral Amendment Act has been set up by the President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, to meet with the House of Representatives Conference Committee for the harmonisation on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill passed by both chambers of the National Assembly.

The Committee is to be led by the Senate Leader Sen. Abdulahi Yahaya representing Kebbi North.

Other members are Sen. Kabiru Gaya, representing North- West, Sen. Uche Ekwunife representing South-East, Sen. Danjuma Goje representing North-East.

Sen. Mathew Urhoghide, representing South-South, Sen. Surajudeen Basiru representing South-West, and Sen. Sani Musa representing North -Central.

The Red Chamber had amended clause 52(3) of the bill to empower the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) to determine the suitability of network for electronic voting procedures with the approval of the National Assembly.

The clause allowing the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) to determine electronic voting process where practicable was however amended, to empower the NCC to determine the suitability of the network to conduct electronic election processes with approval of the National Assembly.
