The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, says it is ready to conduct a successful and credible Governorship election in Anambra State.
The Resident electoral commissioner REC Anambra State, who made this known during a dialogue session with Nigerian Civil Society Situation Room, said violence-prone areas have been identified in the state and measures are being taking to ensure peaceful conduct of election in the area
The Federal Government had earlier threatened to declare a state of emergency in the state, but that position has been faulted by the state government and socio-cultural groups.
Speaking on the level of preparation, Dr Orji stated that the Commission is working with residents, religious leaders and traditional rulers on the need to discourage violence that might disrupt the election.
“We have identified issues and black spots prone to violence and we have alerted security agencies and they are doing their job. The political parties are ready to cooperate and have issued warnings to party members to shun violence”.
“I have confidence in the election security. We have been meeting frequently at the level of the Inter Agency Commitee on election security and we have assurances from the security agencies that the situation in Anambra State is not out of control. The situation is under control and political parties and politicians are committed on having the elections conducted,” he said.
Earlier, the Convener of the Civil Society Situation Room, Ms. Eneh Obi, described the violence and insecurity building up ahead of the Anambra State governorship election as worrisome and appealed to those fueling the violence to desist, as it will be counterproductive if the violence is allowed to derail the conduct of a credible election.
