The President, National Rubber Producers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria, NARPPMAN, Otunba Peter Igbinosun says efforts are on-going to revive the Rubber sub-sector.
He stated this while addressing Journalists in Abuja on its up-coming conference with the theme “Industrialization of the Rubber Sub-sector in Nigeria”.
Otunba Igbinosun explained that production of rubber in Nigeria had suffered neglect since the discovery of oil hence, the need to revamp the sub-sector for economic growth.
”Nigeria was number 5 in the world in terms of rubber production, today we are number 23. All that Nigeria was doing in terms of employment with rubber, and contributing to the GDP of this country, they went down the drain because rubber was more or less forsaken”. Otunba Igbinosun stated.
He highlighted some of the challenges that had hampered development in the sector to include government policies, lack of multi-lateral or bi-lateral agreement to develop rubber, and most of the rubbers that were planted before now, they had outdone their economic value, there was no finance to start doing the re-planting process.
The National President of NARPPMAN, said the Association was working with relevant government agencies to address the bottlenecks to the development of Rubber.
Otunba Igbinosun said that the National Rubber Conference is aimed at opening economic corridors for stakeholders and investors in the industry
