DG PGF Dr Lukman Salihu
The Director-General, Progressives Governors’ Forum, PGF, Dr. Salihu Lukman, has blamed the rise in unethical, unfair and other substandard practices by party and public officials on inadequate funding.
In a statement, the All Progressives Congress, APC Chieftain observes that lack of information on the responsibility of members on financial contribution, expenses and donations breeds suspicion and lack of accountability.
While commending the Senate for endorsing direct primaries for all the political parties, however expressed concern that lack of membership participation in the primaries had been a source of concern for party members.
He describe the Nigerian reality as unthinkable, where party funders to say the least, were free riders across almost all Nigerian political parties where issues of membership subscription hardly existed.
Dr. Lukman said political practice and culture in any party should be about recruiting loyalists to be members as against a strong financial member who would control the party.
However, Dr. Lukman expressed hope in the nation’s democracy, stressing that unlike in the past, when Nigerians considered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as the extension of the ruling party, relatively, INEC’s independence was greater and more reflected in the results of elections.
