NAWOJ Condemns manhandling of street sweepers in Calabar

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Cross River State Chapter has condemned in strong terms the Ill-treatment of some street sweepers who took to the streets of Calabar to protest the non-payment of their six months salary.

The State Chairperson, Mrs Umo Basi-Edet said aged women, some widows being tear-gassed by security operatives for committing no offense.”

According to her, the offense committed by these poor women was to ask for their meager salaries of 7,500 only owed for the past 6months to be paid them.

she emphasized that the women who wake up as early as 3 am-4am, take to the streets irrespective of the many risks of being attacked, raped or even knocked down by vehicles just to keep the State Capital Clean and Green.

NAWOJ, therefore, called on the State Government to address the issues raised by these women and do the needful to ameliorate their sufferings.
