FG launches project to tackle malnutrition

The Federal Government in Collaboration with a Non-governmental Organization, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, GAIN, has launched a project, Strengthening Nutrition in Priority Staples, SNIPS, to tackle malnutrition in the country.

At the launch in Abuja, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Muhammed Abubakar said  the project aims at strengthening priority value chains focusing on some important crops such as maize, cassava, rice and orange fleshed sweet potatoes.

 Represented by the Head of Agriculture Division, Mrs Omotosho Agbani, the Minister noted that malnutrition in the country had remained a public health problem which had persisted for over twenty years with stunting, wasting and under-weight among Children under five.

 The Senior Project Manager, Supply Chains for Commercialization, GAIN Nigeria, Mr Godwin Ehiabhi said the project which is at its pilot stage is to be implemented in four states which are Kaduna, Benue, Nasarawa and Oyo.

He explained that Biofortification, Workforce nutrition and business support are the three major components of the project.

On his part, the Country Director of GAIN Nigeria, Dr. Michael Ojo urged the Federal Government to address structural issues in the food value chain to reduce the prices of food items in the market.
