Update: Several trapped as 21-storey building collapses in Lagos

A twenty-one storey building has collapsed in Ikoyi, Lagos state.

The building located at 20, Gerrard Road, collapsed around 3pm on Monday.

In the meantime, Excavation has begun at the site of the twenty-one storey building that collapsed on Gerald road in Ikoyi area of Lagos.

As at twenty minutes past nine o’clock this evening, one of those trapped in the building, identified as Sunday Adeniran called and sent a message from under the rubble that he was still alive unhurt.

In his conversation with relatives, the trapped victim said that there were about two to three others around him.

All emergency management agencies are putting heads together to rescue some of the trapped victims and the situation is slowing down the excavation of the collapsed structure.

Our Correspondent who has been keeping tabs on the mishap reports that the emergency responders are employing every method and tool to ensure that those trapped are safely removed from the rubble of the twenty-one storey building.

Meanwhile, some of those who escaped from the disaster told our man that the building vibrated before it collapsed with some of the lifts giving way one after the other.

The acting coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye confirmed the development to newsmen.

The Director-General of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, also said the agency has activated its emergency response plan.

Meanwhile, The Lagos State Government has called for calm over the collapsed building on Gerrard Road, Ikoyi.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered an investigation into the incident.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso who made this known in a statement said the report of the investigations will be made public in due course.

Three people have been rescued, while four bodies were recovered from the building which reportedly collapsed.

It was alleged that the owner of the building and some construction workers are among those trapped when the building located at number 20, Gerrard road collapsed.

The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat and other State functionaries, including the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako, Commissioner for Special Duty, Mr. Tayo Bamgbose- Martins, as well as the General Manager of the State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke- Osanyintolu were at the scene to muster help for people trapped in the collapsed building.
