Ikoyi building collapse: 2 more bodies recovered

Two more bodies have been recovered from the site of the collapsed building on Gerrard Road Ikoyi, bringing the number of bodies to 45.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, said in a statement that the identification of bodies continues at Mainland Hospital Yaba (formerly known as the Infectious Diseases Hospital) IDH, Yaba, Lagos.

Mr Omotoso said 32 families have submitted DNA samples to claim the bodies of their loved ones.

He said contrary to rumours making the rounds, no directive has been given for the demolition of the two high-rise buildings standing at the site of the 21-storey collapsed building.

Mr Omotoso said the Panel of Inquiry instituted to establish issues surrounding the collapse of the building was conducting an integrity test on the adjourning buildings and advised against pre-empting their findings.

The Commissioner said search operation at the site of the collapsed building continues, while vehicular movement around the site has been smooth, following the reopening of the road.
