Fire has destroyed shops and products worth millions of Naira at the popular Nyanya market in the Federal Capital Territory.

Comrade Ahmed Shehu, Chairman of the Nyanya Market Traders Association, said the fire started about 7: 30 p.m. on Tuesday and raged till the early hours of Wednesday morning.

According to him, the fire was caused by a spark at a power circuit.

Although no casualties were reported, he said most traders had filled their stores in preparation for the seasonal Yuletide sales.

”Some of them are importers; they just imported goods hoping to sell for December”, Comrade Shehu told Radio Nigeria.

The chairman also praised the police and fire departments for their quick response and urged the FCT administration to improve market standards to allow for quicker access in the event of an emergency.

Traders and shoppers who had been affected by the fire could be seen lamenting their predicament.

Ogbunna Okereke and his wife, who also spoke to Radio Nigeria, said they had lost all their investment, while Shola Ogunsemi said she lost more than N6m in the fire.

They appealed to the government to assist them in re-establishing their businesses.
