NHRC seeks protection for women, girls against gender-based violence

The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, in Edo State has stressed the need for the protection of women and girl child against gender-based violence in the society.

Edo State coordinator of the commission, Mr Olumide Dosumu made the remark when he led other members of staff on an advocacy visit to the secretariat of Edo State council, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, in Benin City.

He said the campaign became necessary to raise awareness about the negative impact of sexual and gender based violence.

A former chairman of the Edo State council of NUJ, Mr Desmond Agbama who received the delegation commended the NHRC for their role in promoting human rights and called on them to be more committed to the task.

Staffers of the National Human Rights Commission during the visit carried placards with inscriptions such as “Say No to Violence Against Women and Girls”, ”Violence Against Women is Preventable” and “”Stop Gender Based Violence”.

As part of the commission’s activities to mark the 16 days of activism, NHRC extends advocacy visits to relevant stakeholders with the aim of reminding them of their role in curbing the scourge of gender-based violence.
