The Federal Road Safety Commission FRSC says it has arrested 16 motorcycle couriers for obstructing pedestrian pathways and making it impossible for people with disabilities to cross highways in the Federal Capital Territory.
Their vehicles were also impounded, FRSC Sector Commander in the FCT, Mr Oga Ochi, during a news briefing on Wednesday, said it was part of a special operation to rein on motorcycle couriers.
He said the riders were abusing the government’s provision for free flow of traffic on major routes in the FCT, noting that the majority lack licenses to ride motorbikes.
Additionally, he stated that 3,000 personnel have been deployed and that the FCT’s 12 ambulance sites would be operational during the ember months to cater for emergency cases.
The Commander urged motorists to avoid one-way driving, texting and driving, overloading and speeding, as well as to observe traffic lights, noting that mobile courts would be on hand to prosecute violators.
