The Court of Appeal sitting in Akure, the Ondo State capital, has set aside the judgement of the Ondo State High Court which sentenced the founder of the Sotitobire Praising Chapel, Prophet Babatunde Alfa, to life Imprisonment.
In 2019, an Ondo State High court handed Prophet Alfa a life jail over the disappearance of a one-year-old boy, Gold Kolawole in his church.
The Sotitobire founder had asked the appeal court to nullify the life sentence handed down by the lower court.
Justice Gamma Barka, who read the verdict on behalf of other members of the appellate court, ruled that the circumstantial evidence upon which the high court based its judgement was not enough to convict Mr Alfa.
Prophet Alfa was therefore discharged and acquitted.
Meanwhile, the Sotitobire praising chapel in Oshinle Akure went agog when the news of the judgement filtered in.
Members of the church had arrived early in the morning offering praise and worship, as well as prayers for the acquittal of their General Overseer, Radio Nigeria reported.
The atmosphere within and around the church quickly turned into a carnival as the news broke that Prophet Alfa had been set free by the Court of Appeal.
