Staff and lecturers of the Anambra State Polytechnic Mgbakwu, Awka North Local Government Area have staged a peaceful protest calling for the immediate removal of the Rector of the Institution, Dr Nneka Mefo.
The protesting staff who carried various placards chanted solidarity song blocking the entrance gate of the Anambra State House of Assembly complaining of high-handedness and maladministration by the rector.
The placards had various inscriptions like, “Retired Staff Must Go”, “External Auditors Needed in ANSPOLY”, “ANSPOLY Governing Council Must Go”, “Rector has been on seat for 14 Years”, among others.
Speaking on behalf of the Staff, Comrade Emeka Ilouno lamented that since the upgrade of the school from College of Agriculture to Polytechnic in 2017 by the Willie Obiano led Administration, the school has continued to nosedive in terms of administration and infrastructure.
According to him, there is an urgent need for the state government to look into the school administration with a view to laying off the present heads led by the Rector, Dr Mefo to allow for staff and students’ growth.
Comrade Ilouno questioned why the position of Rector which should be a four-year tenure would be occupied by one person as Provost and Rector for over fourteen years.
The Clark of Anambra State House of Assembly, Mr Pius Udo who spoke with staff in private referred the protesters to the government house as it was the duty of the executive to implement and address most of their demands.
As at the time of filing this report, the protesters were in another meeting with the Secretary to the State Government as journalists were not allowed in.
