Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle, has visited President of Niger Republic, Mohamed Bazoum as part of efforts to end armed banditry between Nigeria and Niger Republic.

A statement by the Press Secretary to the Governor, Jamilu Iliyasu Birnin Magaji, said the two leaders met at the Presidential Palace in Niamey.

The meeting aimed at addressing insecurity especially in North West Nigeria and Niger Republic.

Governor Matawalle thanked President Bazoum for the opportunity given to him and Zamfara State Government to discuss security issues, especially kidnapping, cattle rustling and armed banditry in Maradi Region and parts of Zamfara, Katsina and Sokoto States.

He briefed the Nigeri leader on the measures his administration has taken to end criminal activities in the region.

He said his administration has provided intelligence to security agencies on how best to trace people who provide information to the armed bandits and their collaborators.

Governor Matawalle informed his host that his administration has placed CCTV cameras in strategic positions, so as to enable security agents monitor the activities and movements of people in the state capital. The aim, he said, is to track and neutralise criminal hideouts in the area.

He said the Zamfara State government was donating five brand-new Hilux Vehicles to Niger Republic to help provide special border patrols at Maradi and other parts of the landlocked former French colony, as it shares Borders with Zamfara, Katsina and Sokoto States.

He requested for regular security meetings with Niger’s Minister of Defence, the Governor of Maradi and Governor of Zamfara State as well as those of Katsina and Sokoto States. There was the need, Mr Matawalle said, to address the lingering security challenges facing the two countries.

President Bazoum thanked Governor Matawalle for the visit, commending him for the efforts he has made to end the spiraling insecurity facing the two West African countries, especially within the border areas between Maradi (in Niger) and North Western Nigeria.

President Bazoum urged his guest to continue with the efforts at addressing insecurity in Zamfara. He told the governor that it was time to change the narrative; hence the need to devise new methods of achieving the sustenance of peace in the Region.

Niger Republic was ever ready to support Zamfara State in the fight against insecurity, President Bazoum stressed.
