The North East Development Commission (NEDC) says it will continue to promote sporting activities among displaced persons to ensure peace in insurgency ravaged communities.

Managing Director of the Commission Alhaji Mohammed Akali stated this at the closing ceremony of sports competition and Games master’s workshop for IDPs at the Elkanemi Worriors sports centre Maiduguri.

Mr Alkali explained that while the competition was organised to engage the youths in sporting events it was also to discover talents at the grassroot level.

He promised to replicate the competition across all the states in the region to foster unity and peaceful coexistence.

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum represented by his Chief of Staff Prof Isa Hussaini congratulated all teams that participated and assured to sustain the partnership with NEDC in sports development.

A total of 10 clubs from 10 local government areas participated with team Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) emerging the winner of the Peace Cup after defeating Kukawa football club 4-3 after a penalty shootout.

Highpoint of the event was the presentation of trophies and medals by the representative of Gov Zulum, the Managing Director NEDC and other management staff of the Commission to the winning teams.
