The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Imo State Command, has arrested a 27-year-old man, Chetachi Ibe, in connection with alleged armed robbery and gun running in the state.
Parading the suspect at the Command headquarters in Owerri, the State Commandant of the Corps, Micheal Ogar said the man, who hails from Akaeze in Ebonyi state, had been on the run since last December when 34 assault rifles were discovered in the suspect’s hideout.
He said the suspect was arrested by officers and men of the Command following intelligence report.
Mr Ogar disclosed that live ammunition, 15 automated teller machine cards, cheque book belonging to a company and identity cards belonging to his victims were recovered from the suspect.
“We arrested him for armed robbery and gun-running,” Mr Ogar stressed.
“Those rifles that were recovered were linked to where he was staying; we also recovered 9mm 50 ammunition pistol from him. We also recovered 15 ATM Cards and seven identity cards, one of which belonged to a Road safety officer; and Two couples have come here to confirm that this young man robbed them of N250,000.00 and a POS machine,” he said.
The suspect will be arraigned in court when investigations are concluded, Mr Ogar hinted.
The suspect, who claimed to be an artisan, has denied any involvement in the crime.
On December 3, 2021, the NSCDC in Imo state had displayed a total of 34 assault rifles recovered from a hideout in Owerri.
Mr Ogar used the opportunity presented by the latest arrest to commend the Imo state government for donating additional four patrol vehicles to the Command to boost its activities.
He promised to sustain ongoing effort by the Corps to rid the state of crime.
