Electoral Act: Reps adopt Consensus mode

The House of Representatives has reconsidered and passed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2021 to accommodate Consensus as a mode of selecting a candidate for election.

This followed a decision by the House to rescind its last week’s decision on the Bill which allows Direct and Indirect Primaries as the mode.

The Speaker, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila made the announcement after the lawmakers reconvened from a 20 minutes closed-door session.

Speaking before the re-consideration, the Speaker Mr Femi Gbajabiamila said the decision was to avoid the need for concurrence with Senate that could delay the bill.

The House while reconsidering the Bill, amended clause 84 (1-13) to accommodate consensus as well as mandated Political Parties to use only the Nigerian Constitution while disqualifying aspirant not the party constitution.

It also adopted a special convention or nomination congress by political parties to ratify the nomination of party candidates by consensus.
