Director-General, Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NHISA), Mr Clement Nze has called on the federal government to construct buffer dams along the Benue River to check incessant flooding in the country.
The Director-General who stated this in an interview with Radio Nigeria in Abuja explained that buffer dams could also facilitate agriculture and hydro purposes to enhance development.
Mr Nze gave an indication that the federal government was reviewing the Dasin Hausa buffer dam in Adamawa State, which had not been constructed about 40 years after an agreement was reached between Nigeria and Cameroun for the construction of buffer dam each in both countries.
He decried inadequate funding and manpower deployment in some states to mitigate flooding.
The Director-General further called on the citizens to commence evacuating of drainages now, as this year’s early warnings from appropriate authorities were being expected.
