The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has commenced the enrollment of Corps members for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The Insurance Scheme, under the Group Individual and Family Social Health Insurance Programme, aims at providing access to quality healthcare at no cost to Corps members.

The Director-General of NYSC, Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim gave the indications during the inauguration of the health scheme in Abuja.

General Shuaibu said the Programme had been designed to cover the period of pre-orientation till the end of the service year.

He said for effective implementation, six Health Maintenance Organisations (HMOs) had been selected after a competitive process for each of the six geopolitical zones.

The Executive Secretary of NHIS, Professor Mohammed Gambo described the initiative as the right step that would contribute to the wellbeing of young people.

The Director, Corps Welfare and Health Services Department, Omotade Ayodele said the enrollments would help to lift the burden of settling huge medical bills hitherto incurred by the NYSC.
