Ten people are believed to have been killed at a funeral in the Ebenebe community of Anambra state’s Awka North local government area.
Ozor, 34, was believed to be interred when mourners were shot at by unidentified gunmen.
Bullets were said to have smashed the casket holding the deceased, whom the police had labelled a “notorious cultist.”
The late Ozor had contested and won the chairmanship of a transport union following the alleged killing of many people during the process.
Ozor was shot dead in December 2021.
Mr Ezikel Okafor, an indigene of the town, described the incident as “extremely terrible,” adding that gunshots could be heard even from outside the venue, of the burial.
Chief Joe Nwegwu, the traditional Prime Minister of Ebenebe, stated that they were conducting an elders’ council meeting at the palace when the news broke, forcing the discussion to be brought to a halt.
According to Onowu Nwegwu, many people were shot and rushed to the hospital.
Mr Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer in Anambra State, stated that the violence occurred at the funeral of the notorious cultist Ozor and was carried out by a rival cult gang.
In a statement, he added that about 5 suspected cultists were killed during the altercation and that some corpses had been taken by the family.
The Statement guarantees that the perpetrators of the crime will be pursued until they are apprehended.
