LASEMA to create Response Unit within Ladipo market

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, says it will work with traders at the Aguiyi Ironsi International Market, Ladipo in Mushin to create a Response Unit within the market.

LASEMA’s Director-General, Dr Femi Oke-Osanyintolu announced this on Sunday during an assessment visit to the section of the auto spare parts market which was destroyed by fire on Friday night.

Explaining that poor accessibility, due to the close nature of the shops at the affected shopping complex impeded responders, Dr Osanyintolu who said his men and officials of the Fire services were able to contain the fire with no record of mortality despite the presence of highly flammable materials, said the Agency would be collaborating with the Local Government to see ways in which spaces between complexes can be created, while some of the traders would be trained to serve as community/first responders

He said “Accessibility to all these shops were difficult that day, we are going to train men here so that they would be able to respond to any form of emergency in this place, educate them on early warning, concerning the preventive aspects of emergency and we are going to ensure that we have response unit in here”

While thanking the State government for the support rendered to them so far, the Chairman of the Aguiyi Ironsi International Market, Chief Immanuel Mbamara appealed to the government to assist those affected in whatever way it can.

“I want to make this passionate appeal, we lost billions of naira, the building collapsed, my men were crying, those of them that their shop burnt lost everything, virtually everything, put together, the loss is in billions, I want Lagos State government to help us, we are in serious mess”

The fire which reportedly started late on Friday gutted two blocks with about two hundred shops within the complex, destroying goods, including vehicle engines, gear box, coils, catalysts, brakes, silencers and other vehicle spare parts.
