8 illegal loggers arrested at Okumu national park

8 illegal loggers have been arrested at the Okumu National Park in Edo state following an intensified effort to rid the Parks of all forms of illegal activities and save one of the remaining samples of the tropical rainforest in Nigeria.

A statement from the Public Relations Officer, National Park Service, Conservator of Park, CP Emmanuel Ntunyang says the service has re-enforced intensive Park patrol, especially in the Western area of the Park.

Parading the suspects in the Park Head Office in Udo, Ovia South West LGA of Edo state, CP Augustine Obekpa
gave assurance that the effort would be sustained through the vigilance, doggedness, and dedication of the Park Rangers.

CP Obekpa emphasized that the service would no longer tolerate any encroachment into the Park Facilities.

He commended the Conservator-General, Dr Ibrahim Goni for his visionary leadership as well as Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki for his willingness to collaborate with the Service to protect the resources of the Park.

Items recovered from the suspects include; one Lorry load of wood, one Tractor, two Motorcycles, two power chain saws, and one Dane gun.
