Pro-Chancellors seek probe into OAU VC appointment

The Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Nigerian Federal Universities has called on law enforcement agents to investigate the protest against the appointment of Professor Adebayo Bamire as Vice-chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State.

A statement by the Chairman of the Committee, Emeritus Professor Nimi Briggs described the protest that blocked the entrance of the University, preventing the free flow of traffic as unwarranted

It explains that the protest assumed a most bizarre dimension when masquerades and traditionalists began to parade the campus, placing fetish objects in various locations.

It notes that that insistence that an indigene of Ife be appointed to the position of Vice-Chancellor which formed the basis of the protest is unfortunate as OAU is a Federal Institution and has staff from all over Nigeria

It says the University recruits staff and admits Students from all over the world and the vice-chancellor can come from any part of the country and the world.

According to the statement, stringent protocols guide the appointment of the vice-chancellor which ranges from a defined scoring formula, oral presentation of the candidate’s vision for the university if appointed, and his or her track record and pedigree.

The Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Nigerian Federal Universities says the Owelle Oscar Udoji led Council meticulously went through the process to appoint professor Adebayo Bamire as Vice-Chancellor

It adds that the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators of the protest will serve as deterrence of future occurrence
