A Lagos State High Court in Ikeja sentenced a 33-year-old motorcyclist, Michael Ahmed, to life in prison for raping a passenger who was a minor at the time of the crime in 2013.
According to Justice Hakeem Oshodi, the prosecution was successful in proving the case against the defendant beyond a reasonable doubt.
Justice Oshodi stated that there is clear evidence before the court that the defendant forced himself on the victim, as well as evidence that the convict bit the victim in the process.
Prior to sentencing, the convict’s counsel, Mr Ramon Bashir, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy, citing the defendant’s lack of a prior criminal record.
Justice Oshodi ruled that the court clearly considered the allocutos presented by the defence counsel, but that the offence of rape is mandatory and that the court has no authority to pronounce a lesser offence.
