Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has ordered the suspension of the Permanent Secretary, Office of Head of Service over alleged extortion of money from newly promoted civil servants in the state.
A statement by the Principal Secretary to the Governor, Chief Emmanuel Obasi alleged that the Permanent Secretary was complicit in the collection of money from beneficiary workers for the typing and collection of their documents.
Governor Umahi directed that all Administrative Heads and persons involved in the act should forfeit their one month salaries.
According to the statement, the culprits are to ensure full refund of the monies collected by paying same into the bank accounts of the affected workers with tellers submitted to the state government within 48 hours or risk dismissal from the State Civil Service.
The governor also directed that the Permanent Secretary UBEB should oversee the Office of Head of Service in acting capacity while still remaining Permanent Secretary in charge of UBEB.
