Buhari mourns victims of Katsina boat mishap

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed grief in the boat mishap in Mai’aduwa Local Government Area of Katsina State, in which many are feared to have died.

In a reaction to the incident as reported on Wednesday, President Buhari said he was extremely pained by the capsising of the boat, carrying mostly children on Sallah celebrations, saying that his thoughts are with the bereaved families.

A statement by the Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, says rescue operations by the State Government and National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, are ongoing at the site of the tragedy, hoping to rescue missing passengers.

It says the President has directed NIWA to provide more life jackets to the communities in the areas and prays for the repose of the deceased, as well as the safety of those on board.

The President warns against the use of rickety boats, overloading and none use of life jackets, which have been associated with frequent boat mishaps in the country.
