The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), in conjunction with allied civil society groups under the aegis of Coalition of National Civil Society Organisations, have urged President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately sack the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele from office if he fails to resign before submitting his expression of interest and nomination forms.
The Convener and Secretary-General of the CNPP, Chief Willy Ezugwu made the call during a press briefing in Abuja.
Chief Ezugwu described Mr Emefiele’s action as gross misconduct of office which was against the Public Service Rules and the CBN Act, adding that it would destroy the nation’s economy.
“We demand that President Buhari act swiftly to restore the confidence of international investors in Nigeria’s economy as Godwin Emefiele is clearly a politician and former banker,” Chief Ezugwu said.
Chief He also called on all security agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate the CBN governor’s sources of funding for the alleged branded vehicles with his image in his custody.
While lauding the Judiciary for standing on the path of neutrality, fairness and justice, the groups, therefore, condemned in totality the legal action by Mr Emefiele, in which he prayed the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja to restrain the Independent National Electoral Commission and the Attorney General of the Federation from disqualifying him from contesting the 2023 presidential election.
