The Kano state government has stated that the explosion in the Sabon Gari area early Tuesday morning was not in a school.
Malam Muhammad Garba, the state commissioner for information, said the incident occurred at an animal feed store opposite the school on Aba Road.
He urged residents, particularly those who live in the area where the event occurred, to be calm as the government and appropriate agencies work to resolve the situation.
The commissioner promised that the government would keep the public informed of any developments and advised individuals against disseminating fake news.
Nine persons were presumed dead, according to an eye witness but the police command in Kano State said four people were killed in a gas explosion.
Mr. Samaila Dikko, the state Commissioner of Police, was quoted by the media.
Rescue crews were attempting to locate those trapped inside the building where the explosion happened, he said.
