Prison official kills trader over cigarette

An officer from the Nigerian Correctional Service’s Kano Command is said to have shot and killed a trader over a cigarette.

The incident occurred near the Goron Dutse detention facility when the officer offered the victim N20 to buy cigarettes and was given two sticks in exchange, but he insisted on being given three sticks.

“This prompted the officer to draw his weapon,” an eye-witness stated.

“From the looks of things, the trader isn’t going to make it. Because a white substance was dripping from his mouth and nostrils,” the witness explained.

Officials from the Nigerian Correctional Service’s Kano Command confirmed the incident, saying the officer involved has now been arrested and a panel has been formed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to DSC Musbahu Lawan Kofar-Naisa, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, however said it was an accidental discharge.
