Defamation: Supreme court squashes Peterside’s appeal

The Supreme Court has denied an appeal filed by Dr Dakuku Peterside, a former All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Rivers state, to overturn a N6 billion defamation suit filed against him by another ex-governor, Dr. Peter Odili.

The appeal was dismissed by the Supreme Court in a unanimous decision by a five-man panel of Justices.

Justice Amina Augie prepared the lead verdict, which was delivered by Justice Adamu Jauro.

Dr. Odili filed a complaint in the Federal High Court of Port Harcourt in October 2016, alleging that Peterside, then the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, defamed him in a newspaper article published in February 2016.

He sought N6 billion in damages.

In a press conference, Peterside allegedly revealed that Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, stated during a victory thanksgiving service that Odili assisted him in obtaining the ruling that handed him (Wike) victory.

Odili, on the other hand, called the statement attributed to Peterside “false and malicious.”
