UNICEF programme increases girl’s school enrolment in Kano

A team of journalists and UNICEF officials visited Khadijah Memorial Primary Islamiyya School to assess the level of success of the Foreign Common Wealth and Development Office’s Girls Education Project (GEP3).

The headmaster of the school, Malam Zakari Sani explained to the team that the school had purchased uniforms and learning materials, which had resulted in a significant increase in female enrollment.

He stated that project funds were used to provide the school with doors, toilets, and drainage, which he said helped to improve security for the girls.

He urged the government and other relevant stakeholders to work together and make adequate provision to improve education inthe country.

Alhaji Ibrahim Adamu, Chairman of the School Based Management Committee (SBMC), the intervention also provided opportunities for capacity building for the committee and called for the sustainability of the project.

The Girls Education Project (GEP3), which is implemented by UNICEF and funded by FCDO, pilots a series of intervention programmes in primary and selected integrated Qur’anic schools.
