Amid controversies trailing tenure elongation that lasted for weeks, the Federal Capital Territory Administration has finally sworn -in the newly elected Area Councils Chairmen and Vice-Chairmen to assume their official duties in compliance with the directive of the court order.
The Chief Judge of FCT, Justice Husseini Baba Yusuf represented by Justice Suleiman Belgore administered the Oath of office to the Chairmen and their Deputies in Abuja.
Taking their Oat of Office at the ceremony held at Area 10 Art and Culture, the newly elected council’s leadership pledged to defend the constitution of Nigeria and abide by the rules and regulations guiding the running of FCT without any fear or favour.
They also vowed to govern in fairness, devoid of discrimination against all residents, irrespective of political, ethnic, or religious affiliations, even as they promised to discharge their duties to the best of their abilities in honesty and integrity.
Addressing the newly sworn-in chairmen and their Deputies, the Minister of FCT, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello challenged them to abide by the weighty oat of office they have taken before men and God and shun every form of corrupt practices in the discharge of their duties.
Malam Bello urged the newly sworn-in chairmen to focus on environmental sanitation, community policing, quality health care delivery to the people at the grassroots and most importantly ensure that priority attention was given to education and payment of salary promptly, to guide against strike action in the sector.
The FCT Minister also admonished the Council Chairmen to always collaborate with the religious stakeholders and community leaders in taking sensitive decisions.
” The time of electioneering campaign is over. Now it is time to face and focus on good governance to ensure that electorate enjoy more dividends of democracy in the territory…You should accord priority attention to primary health care services. I also advice you to give attention to sanitation primary education, environmental sanitation and community policing “Bello said.
Contributing, the Secretary, FCT Area Councils Services Secretariat, Abubakar Ibrahim Dantsoho called on the Council’s chairmen to stay focused on carrying out people-oriented projects that would speak for them after their tenure, towards improving the living standards of people at the grassroots.
Dantsoho assured that the Secretariat was committed to effectively monitoring Area Councils’ activities and ensuring that the Chairmen deliver on their promises.
” So, it is a very big challenge, it is not a time for a jamboree. It is time for governance and I urge them to do the best otherwise we will be out for them.” Dantsoho said.
The occasion despite restrictions was well attended by Royal fathers, religious leaders, party followers and well-wishers.
