Suspects arrested for allegedly extorting money from eligible voters for INEC voter registration in Nasarawa state.

Three persons have been arrested for allegedly extorting money from eligible voters to enroll them in the ongoing INEC Continuous Voter’s Registration exercise in Nasarawa state

INEC acting Head of Department, Voter Education and Publicity, Mr. Ibrahim Onawo stated this while briefing newsmen in Lafia the Nasarawa state capital.

Mr Ibrahim Onawo stated that the three persons were arrested by operatives of the Department of State Security Service while distributing registration forms to eligible voters at the Government Science Secondary School Lafia Registration Area.

He explained that the arrest of the suspects followed a tip-off by the committee set up recently to investigate alleged extortion of eligible voters in the state.

The INEC spokesperson added that the suspects would be handed over to the police for further investigations.

In an interview, two of the suspects who gave their names as Mr Christopher Beku and Mr Ebi claimed their nongovernmental organization, Middle Belt Youth Development Organization had collaboration with INEC.

Documents found in possession of the suspects include INEC voters registration forms, a list of people with 1000 Naira against each name and a letter purportedly written by Middle Belt Youth Development Organization seeking partnership with INEC.
