Police Operatives in Anambra state, in collaboration with other security agents, have arrested one Sunday Nwadiagba for allegedly raping a 75-year-old woman living in Nkwelle Awkuzu.

The police had first intervened to rescue Mr Nwadiagba, 30, a native of Eyiba, Ebonyi State, from an angry mob that was on the verge of lynching him to death.

According to a statement on Saturday by Anambra police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect was arrested on Friday in Nkwelle Awkuzu community.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra state, Echeng Echeng reiterated the Command’s stance against mob action by some members of the public who, he said, “resort to jungle justice” whenever they arrest crime suspects.

The People should endeavor to take such suspects to the nearest police station whenever they are apprehended, the statement said.

It says this, according to the statement, will afford the Police the opportunity to conduct appropriate investigation into the alleged crime and bring such persons to justice in accordance with extant laws.
