Suspects paraded at the police headquarters in Owerri, Imo State, on June 27, 2022.
Imo State police have arrested one of the suspected killers of Alhaji Ahmed Gulak, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress who was shot on his way to the Sam Mbakwe airport in Owerri.
The former special adviser to ex-president Goodluck Jonathan, on Political Matters, was shot dead in May 2021
The suspect, Chimaobi Anosike, was brought before journalists at the state police headquarters.
He told reporters that he was a taxi driver who was “compelled” by the gang to follow Gulak to the airport, where he was shot and killed.
He said Gulak was shot because he refused to get out of his (Gulak’s) vehicle when the gang accosted him.
According to the Command’s public relations officer, Mr. Micheal Abattam, the Anosike’s arrest, after being on the run for the past year was the result of “sophisticated intelligence.”
He stated that the suspect escaped during a gun battle between the police and the gang in Aboh Mbaise local government area, shortly after Alhaji Ahmed’s murder.
While five other suspects were killed in the gunfight, the suspect fled the scene and is suspected of being involved in a series of attacks on police facilities throughout the state, the PPRO added.
The command also paraded suspects accused of torching the residence of Ohaneze Ndigbo President General, Ambassador George Obiozor.
