Kwara begins sensitization on Monkeypox

Kwara state ministry of Health says it has commenced a sensitization programme to prevent the possible spread of Monkeypox and other new infectious diseases in the state.

Speaking at a programme in Lafiagi, the state Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer (DSNO), Dr Fatimah Lah, accompanied by the representative of the World Health Organization and other stakeholders said, the essence of the exercise is to sensitize the people on the danger of the disease.

According to her, the Community response will enable the team to educate various sections of the community on the causes, symptoms, and precautionary measures for protecting themselves against the infectious disease.

Dr Fatimah urged members of the community to ensure the early presentation of any suspected case at any health facility to obtain appropriate assistance.

The Medical team leader said necessary contact tracing has been carried out through samples taken from suspected members and identified contacts in the community and other neighbouring villages.

In a remark, the Chief Imam of Lafiagi, Alhaji Jubril Ndaman advised the residents to ensure vigilance and timely report of ailment to the authority for prompt action.

A Nigerian driver, who has been under critical care and observation in the Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, was later confirmed positive for Monkeypox after a laboratory test conducted on the index case.
