FG affirms commitment data protection, privacy

The Federal Government says its working diligently to institute a legal framework for data protection, management and privacy in Nigeria.

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Pantami stated this in a message to a National Dialogue on data protection and Privacy organised by the National Data Protection Bureau and the Nigerian Digital Identification for Development, ID4D in Abuja.

According to statistics by stakeholders at least 100 million Nigerians dont have any form of identification.

This has made Economic planning, effective security services, digital inclusion and the National Digital Economic Plan Strategy, NDEPS difficult to achieve in the country.

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Pantami highlighted these factors and emphasized the need to give a legal framework to data management and protection in Nigeria hence the reason for the dialogue.

The Minister who was represented by the Director General of the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC Engr Abdullahi Aziz therefore recommended robust brainstorming on the area of concern to enhance governance.

The National Commissioner and Chief Executive of the Natioanal Data Protection Bureau, Mr Vincent Olatunji described the event as apt said it would guide stakeholders on the legal drive and economic planning policy of the present administration.

The Coordibator of ID4D, Mr Solomon Odole said the World Bank assisted project is meant to assist NIMC and other stakeholders achieve the goal of digital inclusion and identity.

Representatives of stakeholders such the Nigeria Immigration Service, National Population Commission and the World Bank all pledged their readiness to support the National data policy framework as it would enhance their operational effectiveness.

Papers presented at the dialogue looked at the need to protect Nigerians from data theft, tampering, manipulation and fraud.
