Sierra Leone govt imposes nationwide curfew

The Commission of the Economic Community of West African States ECOWAS strongly condemns the violence that occurred in many locations in Sierra Leone.

A statement by the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja describes as unfortunate the incidence that have led to loss of lives.

ECOWAS calls on all to obey law and order and for the perpetrators of the violence to be identified and brought to justice, in accordance with the law.

Many people have been killed after police opened fire on anti-government protesters in the capital, Freetown.

Clashes broke out when demonstrators set up roadblocks.

Police are reported to be among the dead.

The protests are against the rising cost of living, corruption and police brutality.

They have also been taking place in several towns in the north of Sierra Leone.

The government has declared a nationwide curfew and observers say there is a near- total shutdown of the internet.
