Stakeholders advocate total ban on Okada

Stakeholders at a Lagos State forum on operation of commercial motorcycle operators popularly known as Okada have called for a state-wide ban on their activities.

In June this year, the Lagos State Government banned commercial motorcycle operation in six council areas of the State.

Speakers at the Forum suggest that the ban should be extended to other parts of the State for protection of lives and property.

A transportation expert, Mr. Sanya Oni said the menace of Okada riders was more than the merits and that the state couldn’t move forward with motorcycles as a means of transportation.

An activist, Mr. Nelson Ekujimi called on youths to embrace skill acquisition and shun get rich quick syndrome through the riding of Okada.

A youth leader, Mr Lekan Sulaiman said a state-wide ban on Okada was good but would only be effective if the government had the political will to do so in an election year.

He accused politicians and law enforcement agents of contributing to the Okada menace in Lagos because they were investors in the Okada business.
