The United Nations Expert on Enjoyment of Human Rights of Older Persons, Dr. Claudia Mahler has called on the National Senior Citizens Center, NSCC , to strengthen the protection of older Persons to better their lives in Nigeria.

Dr. Mahler who made the call during an interface with the Focal ageing desk officers held at the NSCCs Headquarters in Abuja, noted that issues of older persons needed greater attention especially on aspects of negative cultural practices that usually demean them as humans

Dr. Mahler encouraged the NSCCs desk officers to raise more public awareness to ensure the inclusion of older Persons as a priority in the scheme of things.

She said her team was in Nigeria to assess what had happened in the time past, the obstacles and the issues concerning older persons that deserve attention.

“So that I can also lobby for more supports in your different ministries, because, sometimes, this is what recommendations can do.

“Let us work together to improve their situation and also tackle issues like structural aging in the system, age discrimination and also find out where we can raise more awareness of older persons in the different sector”, she said.
