WHO holds patient safety awareness campaign

The World Health Organisation, WHO on Saturday held a walk to create awareness on the dangers of unsafe medication practices.

The walk which held in Abuja was in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Non governmental Organization.

The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, represented by the Director Hospital Services in the ministry, Mrs Ade-bimpe Adebiyi, cautioned Nigerians against self-medications, saying it could result to incorrect self-diagnosis and delays in seeking medical advice when needed.

Dr Ehanire noted that there are regulatory bodies that sanctions issues of health malpractices according to the law.

An Ambassador of Patients’ Safety from the Patient Safety Movement Foundation, Mr Edi Idem, said the foundation was currently drafting policy on patients’ safety for Nigeria and the world at large.

According to him the policy would discourage buying of drugs over the counter like in the case of Nigeria.
