National Librarian Professor Chinwe Anunobi
The National Library of Nigeria has begun automating its operations and services.
Professor Chinwe Anunobi, National Librarian and Chief Executive Officer of the National Library of Nigeria, stated this at a press briefing in Abuja.
She explained that the ISBN platform, which allows authors and publishers to apply for and obtain International Standard Book Numbers, International Serials Numbers, and Catalogue in Publication (CIP) numbers, has been automated.
Professor Anunobi stated that the breakthrough has made it easier for researchers to obtain news and articles following indexing newspapers and making them available online.
‘’We have deployed KOHA library automation software for cataloguing and classification in National Library. On the 4th of April 2022, we launched our Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC), the window for all the resources housed by the National Library of Nigeria. This will enable users to virtually check for the materials we have, and their exact location, without physically rummaging our shelves’’.
According to her, the goal is to increase the exposure and usage of the National Library’s rich heritage while also globalizing its operations.
