After a football career spanning over 20 years former Super Eagles Captain Mikel Obi has retired.
Obi announced this on Tuesday on his official Instagram account @mikel_john_obi
“There is a saying that “all good things must come to an end”, and for my professional football career, that day is today. I look back at the past 20 years of my career, and I must say that I am very satisfied with all that I was able to achieve and more importantly the human it has helped shape’’, the former Chelsea star wrote.
He thanked those that supported him over the years including his coaches, family members, fans, and teammates, among others.
“You supported me through my highs and lows, even on days that I did not live up to your expectations. I say a big thank you”, he noted.
While urging those that may have been inspired by him to ‘never give up’, the former Lyn Oslo star said it is not goodbye but the start of another journey, another chapter of his life.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Chelsea wished Mikel were among the first to pay tribute to the star.
In a Twit NFF wrote “Thank you for the memories and good luck, @mikel_john_obi”.
Also in a Twit, Chelsea FC wrote ‘enjoy your retirement @Mikel_John_Obi. thanks for the memories’ with a heart emoji.
