Governors to increase funding for primary health care

Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule

The Nigerian Governors forum is to partner the Federal Government in prioritizing health care financing for Nigeria to achieve Universal Health Coverage.

The Chairman of the Forum and Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, stated this at the launch of the Leadership Collaborative forum with Nigeria Health commissioners in Abuja.

The aim, he said, is to discuss issues bordering on financing primary health care and emerging insights at the sub-national level.

The Chairman of the NGF, who was represented by the Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, emphasised the need for pragmatic steps to be taking in sourcing and channeling funds towards strengthening primary health care systems to improve the health sector.

On his part, the Governor-elect of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji, stressed the need for state governments to increase their health budgets by cutting the costs of governance.

Some of the participants opined that government at all levels can source for funding through taxed items to finance the health sector.
