House of reps tackle funding for prisons

The House of Representatives has stressed the need for special funding for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS).

The chairman, House Committee on Reformatory Institutions, Anayo Edwin, said this at a public hearing on a Bill for an Act to establish the Nigerian Correctional Service Trust Fund.

Mr Edwin stressed that the NCS has a crucial role to play in the security of the country, saying the ability of the service to play its role effectively has been hampered by inadequate funding.

According to him, ” the Correctional Act which made provision for special intervention fund for the non-custodial service is yet to be implemented. Hence, looking beyond the traditional budget process for alternative sources of funding to execute critical projects and programmed is imperative and central to the purpose of the bill.”

The bill seeks to establish the Nigerian Correctional Service Trust Fund to provide for the training and retraining of personnel of the service, provision of state-of-the-art security equipment to enhance their efficiency, among others.
