76 feared dead in Anambra boat mishap

About 80 people said to be flood victims relocating to a safer place, and traders have reportedly drowned after a boat conveying them capsized in Ogbaru area of Anambra State.

The engine boat took off from Onukwu bridge going to Nkwo market in Ogbakuba when it capsized.

Out of the 85 passengers, only nine persons were rescued.

The Chairman, Transition Committee in Ogbaru, Pascal Aniegbuna who confirmed the incident described It as saddening and a disaster.

Also, a former member of the House of Representatives, Victor Afam Ogene, expressed shock over the mishap.

“This is a collective loss for Ogbaru as a whole and we are united in sorrow“, he noted.

At the scene of the incident, the Anambra State Coordinator, Local Emergency Management Committee, Mr. Nnamdi Esimai, told newsmen that the bodies of the victims were yet to be recovered from the water.
