FG to train 750,000 agricultural extension workers

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has commenced the training of the third batch of agricultural extension agents nationwide.

The training which targets seven hundred and fifty thousand agricultural extension agents nationwide was launched in the 36 states and the FCT.

While declaring the training open in Katsina, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Mohammed Mahmud, said the training was aimed at bridging the gap in extension service providers which was affecting agricultural productivity and food security in the country.

He noted that over the years, the agricultural extension system had witnessed a decline due to decreased funding, reduced manpower and lack of interest of young people in agricultural entrepreneurship.

The representative of the Director, Federal Department of Agricultural Extension, Mrs Dorothy Bota, said that the training program was targeted at curbing the decline in the national agricultural extension delivery system due to retirements, deaths and non-replacement of agricultural extension agents across all tiers of government.

Katsina State Commissioner for Agriculture, Alhaji Mannir Yakubu, who was represented by the Managing Director of the State Agricultural and Rural Development Agency, Alhaji Abubakar Dabo, commended the Muhammadu Buhari administration for making agriculture one of its top priorities.
