Nikolas Cruz in court
A 12-member jury has voted not to give the death penalty to the gunman responsible for the 2018 Parkland shooting.
The jury recommended life imprisonment without a chance of parole.
BBC reports that families of the victims can be seen shaking their heads, visibly upset with the outcome.
Nikolas Cruz, 24, pleaded guilty last year to killing 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida in February 2018
The shooting sparked a wave of anti-gun protests around the US as well as the March for Our Lives movement
It is the deadliest mass shooting to reach a jury trial in the US – all jurors must vote unanimously in order for him to be put to death
The formal sentencing will follow in November
