New leadership emerges for women in sports

The 2022 Elective Congress of the National Association of Women in Sports (NAWIS) have ended in Lokoja, Kogi State with a new set of Executive Committee sworn-in to take charge of affairs of the association for the next 4 years.

The congress which held despite the threat of floods ravaging parts of Lokoja and many parts of the state, eventually produced Prof Mariam Suleiman who was elected unopposed, as President.

Prof Mariam Suleiman takes over from the founder and outgone President of NAWIS, Prof Florence Bola Adeyanju, who had served-up her tenure and opted not to continue in that role.

The only position that was decided by an election saw Controller of Immigration Service, Nkechi Ezugwu defeat Prof Obi Okonkwo 41-5 votes, to become the new 1st Vice President; whilst Hadiza Mubo Ahmed took the post of 2nd Vice-President unopposed.

Also elected unopposed were Janet Jatau as Secretary-General; Hulda Nkwocha-Uba as Assistant Programme Coordinator and former women’s table tennis ace, Bosede Kaffo who will serve as Asst. Research Director; while Kanjini Oluwafunmike got returned unopposed as National PRO.

The Elective Congress with theme, Policy and Politics of women’s sport, culminated in a Dinner Night, where deserving individuals and corporate bodies, including Radio Nigeria and the Nigeria Television Association were applauded for championing the promotion of activities of NAWIS, in the media space.
