The Ministry of Health has advised Nigerians to take proper care of their eyes to avoid blindness.

Chairman of the Ministry of Health’s National Eye Health Committee Professor Ernest Omoti,, stated this in Abuja at a sensitization forum for the Road Transport Employees Association of Nigeria, RTEAN.

Professor Omoti, emphasized some ways to care for the eyes, including avoiding harmful substances in the optics and cautioning women against overuse of cosmetics such as eye lashes.

According to him, cataract and glucoma are two major diseases that causes blindness and affects approximately one billion people worldwide.

A top official of the Road Transport Employees Association of Nigeria RTEAN, Mallam Mohammed Bishara, who said that twenty percent of road traffic accidents are due to diminished eye sight of drivers, urged members of the association to frequently go for eye checks.
